But to the best of my knowlege, he did coin the description of the now sitting premier, well before the 2003 slow descent and spiral.Russ Kuykendallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00282763396971950883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13900996.post-1160071730643624772006-10-05T14:08:00.000-04:002006-10-05T14:08:00.000-04:00Joan;A wonderful piece on Peter. And my understanding was that someone else was responsible.Joan Tintorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12310221026999893117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13900996.post-1160000940069172732006-10-04T18:29:00.000-04:002006-10-04T18:29:00.000-04:00Thank you, Joan. Peter was the origin of describing the now-Premier Dalton McGuinty as "a reptilian kitten eater." What none of the media seemed to get was the allusion to the title character in the sit-com, "A.L.F." "Alf" was the goofy and hapless "reptilian kitten eater" whose name was an acronym for what Peter was really calling Mr. Guinty: "Alien Life Form!"Russ Kuykendallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00282763396971950883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13900996.post-1159998682858015052006-10-04T17:51:00.000-04:002006-10-04T17:51:00.000-04:00Joan: well done. Political staffers are a rare breed indeed, and it brought a smile to my face to read of Peter's razor sharp, slightly twisted sense of humour. It's a defence mechanism that keeps you from going insane while doing those jobs! My sympathies go out to his family, and friends like you who are feeling this loss so deeply.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13900996.post-1159987056756335332006-10-04T14:37:00.000-04:002006-10-04T14:37:00.000-04:00Joan -Thank-you for the touching piece on Peter be...Joan -

Thank-you for the touching piece on Peter being Peter.

My time at GMS seems far and away now but Peter's wit and merriment will be remembered and cherished.

Like so many others who have stories about him, I remember Peter springing practical jokes on an unsuspecting intern who sat on your side of the GMS office at the time - it was classic Peter all the way.

Though I had not seen Peter for many years, I imagine his wit was a strong as ever - he will be sadly missed.

JMAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13900996.post-1159934799148305962006-10-04T00:06:00.000-04:002006-10-04T00:06:00.000-04:00Joan - Brilliant piece; your words have brought s...Joan - Brilliant piece; your words have brought so many more memories of Peter back to me that I had almost forgotten.

It's been more than a few years since I had seen Peter -- the last living recollection I have is at the pre-leadership AGM. Unfortunately a throng of people swept us in different directions.

Your observations on Peter's faith made me chuckle; he would endlessly chide me for my strong interest in Ayn Rand with his wry wit. This went on until he sent me a 30-page theological critique on why Rand is wrong to value money so overtly.

I also remember well his revelling in the media's early characterization of Harris as "Mike the Knife". This was to rich a source of material for him to ignore.

It culminated with one memorable evening when we ended up at some seedy karoke bar near the waterfront with several other staffers, all quite well into the cups.

We all kidded Peter about going up to the mike, and dammit, didn't he go for it!

What followed was an amazing rendition of Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife" which he was re-working on-the-fly into "Mike the Knife".

We were in hysterics. The lyrics lampooned everyone from Francis Lankin to Rae to McLeod and beyond. I wish I could recall it all (it's got to be 10 years ago, now).

The Korean and Vietnamese sailors who loitered in the darker corners of the joint had no idea what was so funny, but they were laughing and applauding anyways.

Thanks again for penning this wonderful piece about Peter; it's brought back some great memories.

CRC.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
