Was Endorsing McGuinty a Bad Career Move for Malcolm?

One of Dalton McGuinty's lucky days during the 2003 election was September 19, when he appeared on Michael Landsberg's TSN show "Off the Record" with Ryan Malcolm, a waiter from Kingston who had days before been voted the first Canadian Idol.

Arriving at the studio for the taping, Malcolm was asked by reporters whom he intended to vote for in the October 2 election. "At this point, I'd have to say Dalton McGuinty. I'm a very Liberal kind of guy."

McGuinty was happy to accept the endorsement: "I'm honoured," he said. "I'm here to congratulate him. He's done a great job for Ontario and put the country on the map in a very positive way."

Two years later, McGuinty has been labelled a serial promise breaker, and on the eve of his second Throne Speech lost most of his government's brain power, thanks to the resignation of Greg Sorbara under an ethics cloud. And where is Ryan Malcolm? Rehearsing for the chorus of Ross Petty's latest Christmas kiddie show, a second album deal having thus far failed to materialize.

I always thought that Gary Beals should have beat Ryan Malcolm for the coveted title of Canadian Idol. I guess I am just a biased maritimer.

I remember watching that show. He echoed that sentiment on-air as well.

Nice to see Malcolm is enjoying his success!

Looking at the poster, it appears that the young lady playing Snow White is Asian....

in that case, wouldn't it make the performance "Yellow Snow"?

I know, I know, it's terrible.

To know Ryan is to love him. He is great to all his fans and contrary to popular belief he is more talented that some already out there! Don't discount his success just yet...you might be surprised at what's around the corner. Stay tuned all you non-believers!

Ryan is amazing! I have met him, and spoke to him, and got to know him! He has a heart of gold! Who care's who he voted for? If McGuinty made it in, that means other people voted for him too! And so what if he's going to be a musical? Ryan loves singing, and likes to act, so why shouldn't he be in Snow White?

...Yellow Snow??? That's the flat out rude!

First of all...when you write an article learn how to spell people's names...Ryan's last name is Malcolm NOT Malcom!!!

Secondly, The question is more like and "Where is Joan Tintor"?
Answer...wasting energy writing articles on the struggle of someone they know nothing about...talk about a successful career.

Thirdly...I love people who are so quick to trample on people whom they have never met. If you were so lucky enough for Ryan to give you the time of day (which he would because that's the kind of guy he is) you wouldn't be so quick to write an article that ridicules his music career. Why? Because you would love Ryan for who he is which is down to earth, humble, and humorous. He laughs at himself and I'm sure being in Snow White and the Group of Seven isn't exactly where he pictured himself to be but whoever said it was going to be an easy ride. A lot of actors and musicians started from nothing and worked their way up and perhaps that is where Ryan is at in this stage of his career. Working with the "idol" title above him might have made it more difficult to be taken seriously and unfortunately now he has to prove to the Canadian music industry and the pubic that he is not an "idol" but just a guy who loves to perform and wants to create music and sing it.

I can’t help but laugh at this. The whole thing is just silly.

The real fact of the matter is, Ryan didn't truly "endorse" Mr. McGuinty at all. Those who know Ryan know that he has a very wry sense of humour, and often when asked a question, he'll answer with a quick "off the cuff" remark. That's what he did when he was asked about which candidate he would be voting for. His comment, “I’m a very liberal kind of guy” just popped out of his mouth. He never meant for it to be taken so seriously. Nobody was more surprised than Ryan when the press … and Mr. McGuinty … made a big deal about it. To say that one little comment was a bad career move? Come off it. What a ridiculous comment!

As for the second CD which you say has “failed to materialize” … it is very much in the works. Another important thing to know about Ryan is that he is a bit of a perfectionist. The first CD was rushed to release so quickly. It was good, but not as good as Ryan would have liked it to be. He also took a lot of flack for the fact that BMG assembled a “writer’s camp” to come up with the songs for the CD instead of him writing his own stuff. This is why he wants to take his time with the second CD, to write most of the material for it himself and make sure he’s 100% happy with it before it’s released. It always astonishes me that other artists can go 4 or 5 years between CD releases and nobody bats an eye. But for “Idol” contestants … if they don’t put out a second CD within one year, people say they are all washed up; that their 15 minutes of fame is over. Give these kids a break, people!

I wish Ryan all the best with "Snow White". With Ross Petty and the stellar cast he's assembled, it's sure to be a success. And when Ryan's new CD hits the stores, I'll be one of the first in line to buy it.

Do we really need more negative press on Ryan Malcolm from yet another totally uninformed source? How easy it is for some...uh Journalists? to jump on the anti-Idol bandwagon without ever interviewing let alone meeting the subject of their disdain. The question Ms. Tintor poses is completely unfounded and has no basis in fact. Perhaps if more research had been done before this article went to print the writer would have known just how busy Ryan Malcolm is and has been since his win on Idol. Insinuating that his career is faltering because he's appearing in a play for children is ludicrous. Ryan Malcolm has proven himself time and again as a versatile performer. He sings, he acts (2 small parts) and he was very charming and personable when he co-hosted E Talk Daily. Now he is branching out to theatre and with his second cd (virtually all songs written by Mr. Malcolm) almost ready to be released it is quite apparent there is very little this incredible young man cannot do. Now...get a rag and wipe that egg off your face...

I have been a fan of Ryan Malcolm since the begining and I still am. I am so tired of people picking on Ryan. Why not pick on Fantasia or Ruben or Clay Aiken for that matter. Where have they been?. It's funny how most of you can pick on Ryan but don't see the big picture here. Ryan is creating a 2nd cd and it's going to come out with a bang. Ryan's true fans have been waiting patiently and we are so excited about it and ready to go out to the stores and pick up a copy. If you all want to start saying crap about Ryan and his success may I suggest that you come to the boards to find out facts before you automatcially assume that his career is over. If you notice all of the other idols the only way you would get information about them is if you go to there website. They are never on the radio and to me that is horrible. Look at Kelly Clarkson, to me even though I like her and I have her cd. I think she is being over promoted. No one who has been a idol has been promoted like the way she does. I say if you have nothing nice to say then don't say it at all and get your facts straight.

Hey Ryan fans, I apologize for misspelling his name in the headline. This has been corrected.

My observation on his second album is accurate. He can be writing, recording and mixing 24/7, but until an album is released it has not "materialized," which Oxford defines as "become actual fact; happen. 2 appear in bodily form."

If you are looking for criticism of Clay Aiken, you will have to look elsewhere, as I am a fan of his.

Thanks for all your comments.

hi there, all i have to say is that the comment about elana being "yellow snow" is one of the most disrespectful things that i have ever heard. she is an extremely talended person and perfect for the role. i happen to be a personal friend of elana's and know that she would be extremely hurt by that comment. she's putting her heart and sole into this role,so until you get a lead role in big production such as this, lay off

Joan give me a break......

Ryan Malcolm is the most amazing person/artist I have ever met. As someone previously posted...you should be so lucky to have the privilege of meeting him. Actually one day I hope you do and then you can write a more accurate account of his career.

Also Ross Petty is known for creating these family musicals(not kiddy)with raving reviews. My family has been in the music industry since my Grandparents being in the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. Live performance is one of the most difficult areas in the creative field to master and I am offended that you belittle live theatre. Being a part of this musical is in no way a failure or a step down. It's part of building a real music career for Ryan.

Just because there is no media attention on Ryan doesn't mean he's made any sort of "bad" move. Anyone can put out a cd these days and it can be mastered, mixed, over and over again to sound good. Ryan sounds amazing all by himself with his guitar in hand; as I was privileged to witness on Oct.15th at his family's restaurant in Kingston.

When his new cd is released you should really take a listen for yourself!

Joan

Your opinion on Ryan's second cd is not ACCURATE. He has not failed. The album hasn't even come out in stores yet and already you are judging him. Who gives crap if your a fan of Clay or not. This isn't what this is about. You have no problem dissing Ryan but then when a idol that you like comes along you can't critize them? and you consider your self a professional publisher? Please your not a professional. Like the post above me, give me a freaken break!!!

Ryan is a very talented artist. I'm sure his second cd will materialize & be well worth the wait.
It's too bad peoples comments always have to include digs towards other people!!

Why is it that the saying, "If you don't have anything nice to say about someone, then you shouldn't say it at all", doesn't aply to people in the public eye. Why is it that Ryan's comments have to be used against him because someone doesn't like him. I think it's childish.

Ryan is a very talented guy. And his second album is going to be amazing!!!!! So, people should not judge someone if the don't know them.

Ryan Malcolm is very talented and deserves nothing but the greatest success. I know some of you do not like him because he got his start from Canadian Idol, but everyone has to start somewhere! Give him a try, you'll learn to love him! When ti comes out, pick up a copy of his second cd and discover the magic that is Ryan! You will not be disappointed

I am one of many loyal Ryan Malcolm fans. I will echo what others have said: he is amazing to his fans who get the chance to talk to him in person. His voice has only improved since Idol, if that is even possible, since it was always so great. And, by the way, I also am a Clay Aiken fan. I went to his Toronto concert and saw how good he was with his fans. Believe me, Ryan is just as wonderful.
